On June 25th 2017, wall street journal tech reporter Takashi Mochizuki's tweeted in regards to a letter received by Mr. Atul Goyal Jefferies, an analyst who had a meeting with Nintendo.
Summed up, fire emblem heroes and super mario run were released with two different models. Super mario run used the premium model which failed due to the pricing model. Fire emblem heroes used the freemium price model which was free to play but offered in game transactions for additional content, problem being all the content was used up by most users in the first month. Here's the full letter for anyone to see:
Nintendo might be biding their time with animal crossing mobile in order to make sure it has a decent amount of content upon release and utilising a good price model that will keep people using it for quite some time until a new major animal crossing game is announced. Reggie has mentioned that it will release in 2017.

All I can truly hope for from this mobile game, if it does come out, is that they provide a real gaming experience, and it's not just a point-and-click app. All of their games so far have been pretty basic, so I would like to see a true gaming experience on a mobile device. Which is completely possible; there are so many games that have a true immersive gaming model on mobile, but most people think of Candy Crush when they think mobile game.
We'll see.~

I was kind of expecting an app to accompany a main game, like a checklist or something but they seem intent on making a full game which is fine with me. As long as they don't forget to make an actual game eventually lol

Hahaha true. I could definitely see them doing kinda like what the GBA/GBASP Animal Island was for GameCube or something, haha. Just a cool add-on.

It was so great! I loved that I could play with my islander and get a bunch of swag/items to sign back into and pick up later when I played it - even while my GCN was off.
